San Marino Mulls Allowing Residents to Own Chickens

It may soon be legal to own chickens in San Marino.

The this month ordered a staff report on the subject in response to a request from resident Pam King, who has a home with solar panels, a drought-resistant yard and an urban farm to which she now would like to add some chickens, the Pasadena Sun reported.

If the city gives chicken ownership the green light, it would be joining Pasadena, South Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge, which allow residents to keep fowl but under strict guidelines.

At the San Marino City Council's direction, staff employees charged with researching the issue will pay particular attention to the following, according to the Sun:

• Coop size and location
• Number of chickens to allow
• Discouraging commercial gain 
• Possibly requiring a chicken permit
