This year’s 24-hour event was held at Live Oak Park in Temple City and had 30 teams, double the amount from last year, according to special events chair, Patch contributor and co-owner Vivian Chan.

The largest team was comprised of 30 people from Temple City High School and the top fundraising team was a group of 20 students from San Marino High School that participated under the team name United Charity Foundation.

Ling Wu, a longtime American Cancer Society volunteer, that she formed the Southern California Chinese Relay for Life in 2010 after learning of a similar organization in Northern California.

“In Southern California there were no Chinese-speaking volunteers or staff for the American Cancer Society. A lot of Chinese don’t even know about the American Cancer Society,” said Wu, the event's chair. “I wanted to raise awareness within the Chinese community for the American Cancer Society and its services, but I realized that even if I told them they wouldn’t be able to render the services because there are no Chinese-speaking volunteers.”
