‘Rockefeller’ Charged With San Marino Murder Pleads Not Guilty Again

In an arraignment Thursday morning, Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, charged with the bludgeoning death of San Marino man John Sohus, again plead not guilty to the charges, the Pasadena Star-News reported. His trial could last three months.

Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, the man accused of assuming many lofty identities and killing his San Marino landlady’s son John Sohus in 1985, continued to plead not guilty to the charges at the Alhambra Courthouse Thursday morning, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

Gerhartsreiter, who called himself royal descendant Christopher Chichester when he lived in the guesthouse of a Lorain Road home in the 1980s, reportedly moved on to Connecticut and Boston a few months after young San Marino couple John and Linda Sohus went missing in 1985, driving the couple’s truck across the country and giving it away to an unsuspecting acquaintance.

Thursday’s arraignment followed a five-day hearing at the end of last month where witnesses from San Marino and other places where the defendant allegedly lived told of the man’s identities, behavior and stories, the most famous one being that he was a member of the Rockefeller family.

One San Marino couple said during the hearing that the defendant tried to sell them a rug that had what appeared to be a blood stain.

The bones of John Sohus were found in 1994 in the backyard of the San Marino home where John, Linda and John’s mother Ruth “Didi” Sohus had lived. Linda Sohus has never been found.

Prosecutor Habib Balian and defense attorney Danielle Manard agreed to return to court on April 3 for a pretrial hearing, said the Star-News.

The trial could begin in September, Patch previously reported, and defense attorney Brad Bailey told Patch in January the trial could last four to five weeks, but the Star-News now reports that sources close to the case say it could take up to three months and likely be moved to another courthouse due to scheduling conflicts.
