Scary-Good Young Musicians to Perform at Kidspace Pumpkin Fest

Two orchestras of young musicians, ages 6 to 13, wearing Halloween costumes, will perform spooky music at the 2013 Kidspace Museum
Pumpkin Festival in Pasadena, at noon on Sunday, October 6.

The Los Angeles Children’s Orchestra (LACO) and Chamber Orchestra (LACCO), both directed by Susan Pascale, will perform several pieces, including the ‘Adams Family’ theme. The percussion section for that piece will be made up of costumed parents playing 13 different instruments, including, ratchet, vibra-slap, slap stick, snare drum, bass drum, triangle, woodblock, claves, two cowbells and three unique whistles.

They’ll also perform holiday music and an orchestra arrangement of Shostakovich’s eerie Quartet #8.

Pascale will wear an elaborate costume, which is kept top secret until the performance. (In the past, she’s conducted as Marie Antoinette, Cruella DeVille, and Glinda the Good Witch.)

LACO and LACCO draw children from throughout Los Angeles County. All the youngsters study a string instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass) at the South Pasadena Strings Program. This year marks the program’s 12th year. In that time, the orchestras
have been featured on local and national television, and have performed three times at
Carnegie Hall in New York City. They recently began fundraising for an invitation-only performance at a music festival in Vienna, in 2015.
