Twilight Wine Tasting

Where:

When: 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, May 27 (and again on Friday, June 24)

Celebrate the grape at Descanso Gardens. These popular wine tastings are sophisticated events at twilight, open to all Descanso members. Sips plus gourmet appetizers equals an education to “wine” about.  Reservations required, 818.790.3662. Some spots still available for May 27 and June 24 tasting in the Rose Garden. $50 per person.

Audubon Society Art Show

The greater Los Angeles Audubon scientific illustration program presents student artists and their interpretation of birds of Los Angeles. Student art from the Los Angeles Audubon scientific illustration program will be on display. 

Come meet the artists and future birders of Los Angeles. Take a “peep” at the first Los Angeles Schoolyard Habitat. Art show and self-tour at Leo Politi Elementary School, 2481 West 11th Street, Los Angeles.

Backyard Chickens & Bees

The effervescent, knowledgable John Lyons leads this class in home chicken raising and beekeeping. Even if you have no desire to add to your already hectic lifestyle, come find out what’s driving ¾ of the Los Angeles population to the birds. Lyons will cover chicken varieties, coops, feeding, pest control, and for bees, you’ll learn all the necessaries for a healthy, productive hive.

Iris Walk + Talk

Where:

When: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 28    

Gardener Will Martin walks and talks through the Iris Garden, sharing information aplenty about the care and culture of these perennial bed mainstays. Free with admission and located in the Descanso Gardens Rose Pavilion.

Ranch Open House 

Where:

When: 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 28

This relatively new urban agriculture living lab, The Ranch House at the Huntington Gardens, is open for two public visiting days this season. The next date, May 28, gives the public a chance to see the latest in ecological, agrarian methods in practice, and to interface with the staff who work all that soil and crop magic. Free with general admission; no reservations required.  The Huntington Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA 91108 626.405.2100  Summer hours in effect as of Labor Day weekend, 10:30 to 4:30, closed Tuesdays.

Santa Anita Bonsai Show and Sale

Where:

When: 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, May 28 to Monday, May 30

Santa Anita Bonsai Society will display, demonstrate and sell trees pruned and shaped in the age-old art of bonsai, featuring giant trees groomed to look like lilliputs.  Maples, junipers and pines up to four feet tall will be shown.
