Librarian’s New Book: The Internet Can Improve Your Life

Leave it to Crowell Public Library librarian Irene McDermott to write a book about the most useful online resources for practically everything you need.

When reference librarian Irene McDermott isn’t helping patrons at the , she’s guiding others through the vast lands of information in other ways, as in her new book, The Internet Book of Life: Use the Web to Grow Richer, Smarter, Healthier, and Happier.

For the book, McDermott reworked the most family-friendly columns she has written for Searcher magazine, a journal aimed at librarians, for the past 14 years in which she describes useful websites for librarians and patrons. She sees the book as "a kind of travel guide to the web for busy, working families. … As the country climbs out of recession, my comprehensive guide to free Web services should be very useful.”

Aiming to help individuals and families answer important questions, make better decisions and live fuller, happier lives, McDermott recommends various high-quality, free online resources like websites, blogs, online tools and mobile apps along with practical tips and advice on how to use them.

“Throughout, my emphasis is on real-life goals, dilemmas, and challenges—from matters of personal finance and money saving tips, to parenting, relationships and relationship advice, health and medicine, healthy living, careers, travel, hobbies, pets, home improvement, and more,” McDermott told Patch.
