Six Questions for a San Marino Local

This week I spoke with Ann Gray, President of Friends of the Michael White Adobe.

Located on the campus of l, the has served as an iconic structure for both the city and the school. When resident Ann Gray learned citizens were concerned about the future of the adobe, she did not hesitate to get in touch with Friends of the Michael White Adobe.

Since then the architect and publisher has served as the president of the committee that has lead the preservation of the adobe.

“Indeed there is a contingent of people in San Marino that really love the adobe and remember it before it was closed up,” explained Gray whose group was the recipient of a National Trust for Historic Preservation grant administered by the Los Angeles County Preservation Fund in the amount of $5,000 last year.

The provided a $5,000 matching grant toward the adobe’s preservation.

Friends of the Michael White Adobe has big plans for the structure once it is made seismically sound. The organization is proposing using the adobe as a display space for all the athletic accomplishments of the student body.

“After many many months of discussion and soul searching we decided to make it an asset,” Gray said. “It will become a hall of fame.”

What do you like most about San Marino?

I really like the people--it is just a very surprising, diverse, interesting and stable place.

What is your favorite restaurant in San Marino?

What is your favorite place in San Marino to take a stroll or go for a run?

What is a little known fact about you?

My favorite author is Erle Stanley Gardner; I’ve read every single one. I have them all.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Baskin Robbin’s chocolate with a peanut butter swirl.

What else are you involved in?

I was working on a book on San Marino homes for the and I am the cookie chair of my daughter’s Girl Scout group.
