Amidst the sparkling neon signs, vintage bar and furry birthday crowns, co-owner Jim English stops to chat about his colorful San Marino storefront.
“We change the look of the store four times a year,” said English as he points to the store’s Fourth of July display complete with American flags and star-spangled tableware. “There’s a spring and summer, Halloween and Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day and Christmas.”
After summer, English will dress the front of the store in his favorite spooky garb that includes an actual casket and life-size alien.
English opened the San Marino location of Fancy That! with his wife Paula just three years ago. The husband-and-wife team were operating a store in La Cañada Flintridge when the San Marino space opened up and the pair decided to open a second location.
The two operated the stores simultaneously before deciding on operating their business solely in San Marino.
“When this store opened it was predominately home décor and gifts,” said the Pasadena resident. “We’ve since dropped the home décor and expanded out.”
In addition to the store’s seasonal sections, Fancy That! also has plenty of gifts and decorations for any occasion or family member including a bridal area, men’s section, baby division and pet portion.
Fancy That! has also expanded its “girlfriend” section. One of the store’s most popular items includes a line of SwitchFlops from Lindsay Phillips.
“We enjoy having products that are fresh and contemporary and draw people in,” said English.
English took time out of his busy schedule to take on the San Marino Six.
