Barney's Only Place in Town

This week, I highlight one of the popular local restaurants that have helped define the quaint charm of Sierra Madre.

There was something that drew me to Barney's Only Place in Town as I strolled through Sierra Madre one day. Upon first look, this local eatery located on Sierra Madre Blvd--the city's aptly named main thoroughfare--looks like the venerated kind of restaurant that's been around the block a few times. A staple in the community you could say. The faded wood panel exterior, the "Western-style" font used in the restaurant's sign, the locals dining during off peak hours, everything seemed like this place was "the local spot."

I went inside and met the manager who was nice enough to give me a little crash course on the history of this restaurant. Apparently,  the two brothers who took over operations at Barney's Ltd in Old Pasadena (one of the original restaurants still in business today before Old Pasadena became revitalized) also bought this restaurant in Sierra Madre a few years ago. They decided to stick to the old adage, "Don't fix what's not broke," and keep a lot of the original aspects of both the building and the menu intact.

Some of the most popular dishes at Barney's Only Place in Town include: Santorini Omelet made with cold water bay shrimp, Feta cheese, green onions, and tomatoes; Maggie Wong's Chinese Chicken Salad made with chunks of chicken tossed with romaine lettuce, peanuts, sesame seeds, Chinese noodles and their special sweet ginger dressing; and the Maui Chicken Sandwich made with a charbroiled chicken breast smothered with warm teriyaki sauce, Hawaiian pineapple, mushrooms, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo served on a fresh bun.
