Tell Us: What Should be in This Vacant Storefront?

Vacant storefronts have become a common site during the economic downturn and San Marino is no exception. Tell us what you’d like to see in this space.

While new businesses keep coming to San Marino, businesses are also leaving. In this ongoing feature, we want to know what you would like to see in one of the vacant storefronts in town.

This empty space on Mission Street used to house children’s store Saturday’s Child. What kind of business would you like to see in this storefront? Another children’s store? A bookshop? A café? Think of the possibilities and share your thoughts in the comments.

I loved Saturday's Child, how about a book store? Or another children's clothing store. Children's Shoes - that's why I went to Saturdays' Child - to get our annual dress shoes.

The 100th anniversary of the city is next year. I think it would be cool if the city in partnership with the school district would sponsor an art competition where students in the district could create window displays in the vacant shops. The theme of the art displays could be history of the city and what makes San Marino such a unique community. There could be paintings, sculptures, dioramas, film projects on automated projection systems, video/light displays, interactive computer art, the possibilities are immense. Shoppers could enjoy the art and it would attract interested residents into the business districts.

What a great idea, John! Are you on any of the Centennial committees? You should share that idea with them! Feel free to email me at jessica.hamlin@patch.com and I can help get you in touch with someone if you like.
