Patch Blog: Our Parenting Place Looks Back

Our Parenting Place looks back at its 1st year serving the community, 2012.

In our first year, Our Parenting Place has been successful in opening its doors to residents and non-residents by offering parenting classes on Monday mornings to children ages 11 months old to now 22 months old.  We've held a year's full of Russian classes for children ages 3 - 6 on Monday evenings and Persian language classes for kids ages 5 - 16 on Sunday mornings.  We started a Summer Camp - Around the World in Just Days to enrich the lives of kids ages 5 and up and dive info language arts, conflict resolution, wholesome cooking and art.

We've also held a number of events to enrich the lives of the community members by sharing the founder's cultural backgrounds of Persian and Russian.

We kicked off the year in October with a Harvest Festival also called Mehregan in Persian and opened our doors to the community.  In December we celebrated the Winter Solstice or longest night of the year also known as Yule or Yalda in Persian by hosting a potluck in the evening, sharing food, nuts, fruits and listening to amazing Russian melodies on an accordian.  In March, we hosted our 1st Annual Persian New Year or Nowruz Bazaar, even though we got the heaviest rain in the year on that day, the celebration resumed and we were happy to greet 300 guests.

Another arm of our program is giving our time and services to the community.  We have held a number of parenting workshops to local communities such as local Mom's Clubs and Caltech Women's Club.  We joined the Chinese/English storytime in the Crowell Public Library and are sharing our love for reading with kids.  We had speaking engagements at the PACE Early Childhood Conference in Anaheim in October 2011.  We spoke at the 62nd Annual CCPPNS Convention in March 2012 in Burbank.  We participated in Echo Center's Festival of Childhood in Echo Park in April 2012.  We shared the value of being a teacher at the annual Career Day at HMS.  We helped with Grad Night 2012.

We are proud members of the San Marino Chamber and San Marino Rotary and look forward to collaborating with more community members.
