Return of Neighborhood Watch in San Marino

San Marino works to strengthen its Neighborhood Watch program.

You must have heard this before: “You live in San Marino, that is such a safe neighborhood”. Don’t we all think that way? Nothing will happen in our area; we are this little pocket that is so protected and different than everywhere else. How true do you really think this is? You always have to ask yourself these questions.

I was one of those that lived believing that nothing will happen here in San Marino until one day a friend of mine came to me so shaken as she went home and realized that her whole house was burglarized mid-afternoon. It is a mixed feeling of anger, fright and most of all an invasion of your privacy, not forgetting the sentimental belongings that were swept away as well. What if I had walked in on them, what if they came when I was home alone? Many questions come to your mind and in many cases you will not have answers to them. It was that day we took it upon ourselves to make a difference in our neighborhood and try to revive a very important part of it, a strong Neighborhood Watch.

This all started 2 years ago and ever since Chief of Police John Schaeffer and the Fire Chief Jim Anderson as well as the Councilmen have worked so hard with us to try and reach out to as many residents as possible. It is not an easy process in this hectic life we all lead. The main goals are to increase awareness of the importance of a Neighborhood Watch, to get to know your neighbors and be prepared for disasters. We have to be self sufficient at a time when the police and fire department will not be able to come to us due to more serious disasters around us. For more information on how you can help your neighborhood visit the below sites or call the San Marino Police Department at 626-300-0720.
