6 Questions for a San Marino Local: Fire Division Chief Jim Frawley

The city’s Fire Division Chief takes on the San Marino Six.

With the official start of summer set for June 21, it’s time to start piling on the sunscreen and pull out your favorite straw hats.

But while you're relaxing by the pool don’t let safety float on by. Jim Frawley offers .

“I would say the best summer safety tip is to watch your children while you’re at the pool at all times,” said Frawley. “You need to make sure your pool is safe. Tragedy can happen in a second.”

Frawley, who previously worked for the Glendale Fire Department for 19 years, is the father of two teenage boys and holds child safety near and dear to his heart. Frawley moved to San Marino in order for his children to enter the renowned school system.

“We moved here from South Pasadena almost six years ago,” said the Orange County native. “I was lucky that after we moved here there was an opening with the fire department.”

It’s no secret that Frawley got the job with city’s fire department. The San Marino resident has noticed distinct differences between Glendale and his current small-town residence.

“The biggest difference is the size,” said Frawley. “We do all of the same things. But of course, Glendale is a bigger fire department.”

Come June 30, the current Fire Prevention chief will take on more responsibility with the city’s fire department after retirement. along with and Fire Division Chief Rick Mayhew to oversee the 20-man fire department until the November election.

What do you like most about San Marino?

I love the small town feel. There is a strong sense of closeness and community here.

What is your favorite restaurant in San Marino?

I frequent and eat at all the restaurants here very often. If I had to pick a favorite it would be . They make really good fresh food.

What is your favorite place in San Marino to take a stroll or go for a run?

I like to jog on the streets surrounding the . There is a lot of different terrain in that area--it varies from hills to flat surfaces. I can also stop and talk to all the residents I know in that area.

What is a little known fact about you?

I played the piano competitively. Just don’t ask me to play it now.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Jamocha Almond Fudge.

What is one of your most helpful summer safety tips?

If you go outdoors, be sure to drink lots of fluids. Stay hydrated and try to stay cool.
