Pasadena Business Evacuated, Hazmat Team Investigates Odor

Chemicals used to make batteries at a business on Hill Avenue caused an odor that forced the evacuation of the building, a fire official said.

A business on Hill Avenue was evacuated Wednesday afternoon because of an odor caused by battery-making chemicals, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

The building housing a company called LIOX on Hill Avenue between Walnut Avenue and Union Street was evacuated for about an hour and a half as hazmat teams responded to the scene, Derderian said.

"It produced more of an odor than an actual spill," Derderian said.

The building was later determined to be safe and employees were allowed to return. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
