FDA Announces Cacao Nibs Recall

Some packages of World Berries Organic Cacao Nibs may be contaminated with an especially virulent form of e. coli bacteria.

Certain packages of organic cacao nibs are being recalled because of possible e. coli contamination, the Food and Drug Administration announced Saturday.

San Clemente-based FunFresh Foods Inc. has already collected 263 of 500 six-ounce packages of the World Berries Organic Cacao Nibs that were distributed between April 12 and April 17 to retail stores in California and 29 other states.

The snacks may be contaminated with an especially virulent form of e. coli bacteria called O157:H7, which has been known to cause hemolytic uremic syndrome in a small percentage of people. For the vast majority, the bacteria causes a virulent form of diarrhea.
