Mystery Stench: Do You Smell Something Stinky?

A mysterious rotten egg smell has been reported around the Los Angeles basin and the South Coast Air Quality Management District is investigating its source.

If you smell something stinky in the air and are wondering who's responsible, you're not alone.

A strange, sulphuric "rotten egg" smell has been reported around the Los Angeles basin, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District announced Monday that it's trying to find out where it's emanating from.

"Since around midnight last night, AQMD has received more than 100 calls reporting a strong, foul rotten egg/sulfur odor," the AQMD said in a statement. "Residents have complained from a very wide area including the Inland Empire and much of the Los Angeles Basin. Fish kills, algae blooms and other biologic conditions in lakes can cause strong odors. Industrial facilities such as wastewater plants also can cause sulfur odors. At this time AQMD hasn’t confirmed any source as the cause of the widespread odor."

The AQMD has promised to update residents on the source of the stench later in the day, so stay tuned to Patch for the latest on unexplained smells.
