San Marino Unified Passes 2013-14 Budget

The San Marino Unified School District voted Tuesday to approve a budget with a projection for a $3 million deficit at Tuesday night's meeting.

The district budget, which can viewed in full here, projects San Marino will have to transfer approximately $3.2 million from a reserve fund to cover the balance.  As always, the ultimate figure will likely depend on funding decisions made at the state level.

Julie Boucher, the district's Assistant Superintendent for Business Services, told Patch that reserve fund transfer will help the district avoid furloughs or cuts of the kind that the district has had in recent years.

She noted that because the district is so small, it has avoided major financial trouble mainly through funding provided by San Marino residents: approximately 35 percent of the district's budget come from parcel taxes and foundation support from parents.

"We're a very small, low funded school district," Boucher said. "We're very fourtunate our parents have been able to support us."

The district's long term projections are a little sunnier for the district - their projection for 2014-15 is a $1.4 million deficit, with a $400,000 surplus predicted in 2015-16.
