Teacher Layoffs, City Budgets and More Up for Discussion This Week

The public has the opportunity to attend and comment at a school board meeting and city council meeting this week.

The Board of Education meeting and San Marino City Council meeting will review a variety of issues that could bring change regarding teacher pay and employment, kindergarten class schedule, parking, City Hall renovations and more.

Tuesday’s SMUSD Board of Education meeting regular open session begins at 7:30 p.m. at the SMUSD at 1665 West Drive. The agenda includes:

  • The Board either rescinding or making final the 13 notices of possible employee layoffs issued in March. .
  • Report on the findings and recommendations related to the implementation of a full day kindergarten program at and schools.
  • Approval of the tentative agreement between the SMUSD and district employees such as teachers.

Option for certificated employees to opt out of major medical coverage in exchange for $3600 during open enrollment

Three furlough days (days off without pay)

Reduction of school year from 180 days to 178

Reduction of the substitute pay rate

Possibility of a full-day kindergarten program

  • Report of enrollment for kindergarten and grades one through three that participated in the K-3 class size reduction program 2010-11
  • SMHS Safety Plan

 

Wednesday’s San Marino City Council meeting is held at the City Hall Council Chambers at 2200 Huntington Drive. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. and public comment begins at 7:30 p.m. The agenda includes: 

  • Review of proposed city departmental operating budgets in preparation for adoption of the 2011-12 fiscal year budget on June 24. and officials’ comments here.
  • Further discussion regarding City Hall interior remodeling project. Previous City Council discussion of the renovation mentioned updating furnishings and creating a one-stop-shop of sorts downstairs for residents who have business at City Hall.
  • Consideration of adopting a resolution to change the city’s master fee schedule effective July 1
  • Consideration of removal of two hour parking restriction on Coniston Place, Wilbury Road and Cumberland Road
