During the past few decades in the United States, there has been an increase in the prevalence of kindergarten classes that meet for the entire school day rather than just a part of the day. This increase has been attributed to various social, economic and educational factors.  During the 2010-11 school year, the (SMUSD) Governing Board formed a Kindergarten Study Committee -- consisting of elementary principals, teachers and parents -- to investigate the potential benefits of a full-day kindergarten program and to make a final recommendation to the Board on their findings.  On May 10, 2011, the Kindergarten Study Committee made a presentation to the Board and recommended the implementation of a full-day kindergarten program.

On October 26, members of the committee will present data and information on their study.  The characteristics and description of a full-day kindergarten program will be discussed.  The SMUSD values your input and participation in this important decision-making process.  There will be a question/answer period after the presentation and an opportunity for public comment.

For additional information, you can call Dr. Gary McGuigan, Senior Director of Instructional Services at (626) 299-7000 x 320.
