Whiz Kid: Wrestling Eagle Scout Andrew F. Barth Junior

Each week, San Marino Patch highlights an individual kid, youth group, teen or sports team that wows us with their accomplishments. See who we chose this week and suggest a kid or group of kids you know for Whiz Kid of the Week.

This week's Whiz Kid, Andrew F. Barth Junior, is a young man of numerous talents. Between his athleticism (football & wrestling), his musical talent (he participated in musical production), his giving spirit (attained the rank of Eagle Scout) and his drive to succeed, Andrew is just one of the many model high school students that continue to show how amazing San Marino is.

Andrew's dad was also a wrestling champion--like father like son--and Andrew Jr. is glad that he found wrestling to be his passion too.

His father is Andrew Sr. (a former school board member who served two terms) is in investment management. His mother is Avery Barth--educator, community volunteer and homemaker. Andrew started at and attended . He has three sisters, Emily (21), a senior at USC,; Catherine (19), a sophomore at USC; and Avery Vivian (15), a sophomore at San Marino High School.

Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness:

It's been more than a year since I've started writing these pieces for San Marino Patch. While I am continuously amazed at the young talent our community and education system has to offer, what I find overwhelming is not the things that make our Whiz Kids unique, but the one thing that they all have in common. Every single one of our Whiz Kids exemplify determination and perseverance, but more so, they work incredibly hard for each and every achievement.

This incredible work ethic is once again exemplified in Andrew. In addition to Andrew's motivation to continually push his own limits to succeed, it's his exhibition of a humble and honest mindset. Andrew never underestimates an opponent, nor does he underestimate any task in front of him. He goes into his every endeavor, be it wrestling, giving back to the community as a Boy Scout, or studying hard, Andrew always devotes himself to the sharpening of his skills, and himself.

Andrew's Eagle Scout project was the renovation of the Del Mar Field dugout. Andrew also refurbished the bleachers so the fans and the crowd can enjoy and take part in the continued tradition of excellent San Marino Athletics.

Like any teenager, he enjoys playing video games, hanging out with friends for fun and loved to travel with his family to different countries throughout his childhood years. His family is very important to him and he is thankful for his parents' support and encouragement that help shape who he is today.
