San Marino Shuts Out Eagle Rock, 31-0

Titans limit Eagles to 99 yards of offense in nonleague victory.

A new era began Thursday night for the football team—and perhaps the only people who were not happy about it were those associated with visiting .

Under first-year head coach , the Titans rolled to a 31-0 win over the Eagles at a varsity game at Titan Stadium in San Marino High School.

“I’m looking to see how our team responded—we’re still learning each other,” Hobbie said. “I was happy with the team and how they played. I thought they played with a lot of heart. I’ll watch the tape for more evaluations. For a start, I’m pleased.”

San Marino (1-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and went up 24-0 at halftime.

“San Marino is good football team. They came out and were very disciplined. They ran their offense to a T,” Eagle Rock coach Greg Pierce said. “We broke down on some assignments and didn’t respond very well. They were well-coached on defense and took away most of our game.”

Eagle Rock (0-2) was held to just 40 yards of offense in the first half and had 99 yards for the game.

The Titans started the game with junior Matt Wofford at quarterback. He was later relieved by junior Bradley Haslam and senior Garret Glazier in the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock after the coaches from both sides agreed to it.

“Offensively, Matt Wofford is a helluva player. That’s the reason we started him,” Hobbie said. “He gives us that run threat. With the offense we have, we have to spread things out so we don’t focus on one guy. The offense was executed pretty well for the most part.”

Tailback Kwame Do, who missed most of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, looked like his old self. Do finished with three touchdowns, rushing for 150 yards on 19 carries.

Do scored on runs of 1, 3 and 45 yards.

“Everything feels pretty good. I’m real happy with my knee,” Do said. “There was no pain.”

Do said the long run really gave him a chance to fully test his knee.

“I saw how fast I could be,” Do said. “It gave me a boost of confidence.”

Wofford, who had 72 yards rushing, kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:37 left in the first quarter to give the Titans a 10-0 lead.

He also threw a 5-yard touchdown pass with 2:55 left in the first half to put San Marino up 24-0.

Eagle Rock starting quarterback Jordan Hayes completed 3 of 18 passes for 41 yards. He also rushed for 28 yards on 11 carries.

Nick Abbott relieved Hayes in the fourth quarter and completed 2 of 4 passes for 12 yards. Adrian Gonzalez had two receptions for 24 yards to lead the Eagles.

“This is a good test of our character to see how we’ll bounce back,” Pierce said. “I don’t think our kids came out ready to play. We had a short practice week and were not able to practice on Labor Day. There are no excuses. We got outplayed.”

San Marino will host La Salle High next Friday and Eagle Rock travels to Ontario Christian High.
