SMUSD Superintendent Gary Woods Could Leave for Beverly Hills Position

SMUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Woods is a finalist for the position of Superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District. SMHS Principal Loren Kleinrock will assume the position if Woods is granted the Beverly Hills job.

The Board of Education released Superintendent Dr. Gary Woods from his current SMUSD contract so he can accept a position as the Superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District, for which he is a finalist, the SMUSD said in an email announcement Thursday morning.

In the event of Woods leaving, the Board plans to hire principal Loren Kleinrock.

“For decades Mr. Kleinrock has been affectionately referred to as ‘the Rock’,” said the district in the announcement. “Mr. Kleinrock is exactly that--a rock of strength who has led San Marino High School and helped lead our entire district to where it is now-the Number One unified school district in California for the past six years.”

During his time as superintendent, Woods has seen the district experience significant financial issues as a result of state budget cuts. The local Refuse to Lose campaign in 2010 raised $4.3 million to help prevent a third of the district’s teachers from being laid off.

equivalent to 13 full-time positions were proposed this year for the 2011-12 school year, but due to new pay cuts for teachers next year and funds from the city’s , among other things, the district will not need to cut any positions.
