Walking Wednesdays Celebration at Valentine Elementary (Photos)

Valentine Elementary School held a special "extra recess" on Friday, Dec. 16 for students who participated in the Walking Wednesdays program.

Approximately 75 students were treated to a special "extra recess" on Friday, Dec. 16 as a reward for their participation in the school's Walking Wednesdays Program.

Students who had walked to school for at least 10 Wednesdays this Fall and had their "Walking Passports" stamped were let out of class early for a 20-minute beach volleyball game and play time.

"Our Walking Wednesdays program is designed to encourage more children to walk and bike to school," said Caroline Howell, the program's coordinator and Valentine parent.

San Marino Police Chief John Schaefer and several other police officers were on hand to celebrate and play with the students.

"We have fantastic support from our principal and the police department," said Howell. "[We] are hoping that other students will participate now that they see that extra recess is a reward."

Howell noted that more students are currently walking and biking to school. She hopes that the the next "extra recess" event in the Spring will have 200 students participating.
