San Marino Girls Water Polo Squeaks Past La Cañada

Titans get three goals from Umi Nakamura in the win.

It was a close game between the girls water polo team and La Cañada on Tuesday afternoon, but the Titans were able to hold on for a 9-7 victory in a game that came down to the final seconds to bring their Rio Hondo League record to 1-1 and their overall record to 4-10.

The Titans were lead by Umi Nakamura’s three goals, two of which came at critical points in the fourth quarter.

The Titans and Spartans were going back and forth for most of the game and the lead changed several times before the end of the first half. San Marino steadied its play once the second half got started.

San Marino coach Mark Barr was quick to point out his team’s increased effort as the game progressed.

“It was a close game, but once we were able to get our mistakes out of the way, we were able to get control of it … especially after the half,” Barr said.

The Titans looked outmatched when it came to most of the physical play but were able to use their speed and agility to overcome those odds.

“We’re not a big team,” said Barr. “But we’re quick and we’re looking for our defense to spur our counter and then get us a lot of kick out, which it did today.”

As the game continued, San Marino’s offensive pressure increased and was soon able to stretch its lead to 8-6 with a few minutes left in the game.

Joining Nakamura on the score sheet was Kristin Charlton who put in two goals of her own and as the game came down to the final seconds, the Titans were not done.

San Marino goaltender Carla Bezjan sealed the victory for her team with a shot from half pool to end the scoring at 9-7.

With the victory San Marino was able to keep their playoff hopes alive and they now prepare to take on Temple City on Thursday. La Cañada plays Temple City on Jan. 27.
