San Marino Photographer’s NBA Images to be Featured on Broadway

NBA photographer and San Marino resident Andrew Bernstein will have some of his iconic images featured in the new Broadway show "Magic/Bird," about the rivalry-turned-friendship of two basketball greats.

Since 1983, local photographer Andrew Bernstein has captured many major athletes on film and his work is featured regularly in magazines like Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek and others, according to a press release.

But now Bernstein’s iconic NBA photos are making their Broadway debut in the new show Magic/Bird, which is based on the rivalry and ultimate friendship of legendary basketball players Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

“This play is the first time my work will be featured on Broadway and it’s a true honor,” said Bernstein in the release. “Having witnessed first-hand the evolution of Magic and Larry’s relationship, I think this play will bring to light details of one of the NBA’s greatest stories of friendship.”

The show opens April 11 at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway in New York and Bernstein’s photos can be seen on the show’s Playbill, website and theater marquee.

Bernstein also appeared at in San Marino last year to share his stories of photographing major athletes over the years and present and sign his book The Journey to the Ring: Behind the Scenes with the 2010 NBA Champion Lakers, which features Bernstein’s photos and commentary by Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with Andrew’s son Michael, who attends and regularly photographs sporting events, theater productions and more for the yearbook. He even has NBA photography experience too.
