Search for New Softball Coach Resumes

The Pasadena Star-News reports that the Titans have extended their search for a new head softball coach for an extra six weeks.

has reopened the position of softball head coach for an extra six weeks, the Pasadena Star-News reported Wednesday afternoon.

New athletic director Andrew Gayl said in the report that the school elected to reopen the position in an effort to solicit a larger pool of candidates. Gayl also said that the ideal timeline for the school is to interview prospective candidates in the middle of August.

The article also stated that Titans assistant coach Stephanie Hernandez has expressed interest in replacing Hilda Valencia as the new San Marino head coach.

Valencia announced her intentions to leave the program and go back to school following the Titans’ loss to The Star-News also reported Valencia will attempt to complete her B.A. in sports medicine at San Diego State University.

In her three years with the Titans, Valencia compiled a 36-31 overall record and a 17-19 mark in Rio Hondo League play. Valencia’s best season came in 2010 when she led the Titans to an 18-7 record, a 9-3 finish in league, and the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

“It’s hard to pull away because this is kind of like my therapy,” Valencia said May 24 following her final game with San Marino. “My first year was a struggle, and I knew we would have to build from scratch. I had a great set of assistant coaches, and they were able to put up with the long days, countless hours of practice, and we did it. I am so proud of what the program has become, especially with the support from the parents and the administration.”
