Locals to Walk Against Breast Cancer at Lacy Park

The second Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event will take place in Lacy Park next weekend.

San Marino residents and others will gather at Lacy Park May 1 for the The American Cancer Society’s second San Gabriel Valley Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

“We all have loved ones, friends and co-workers who have been touched by cancer and an event like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer allows us to come together as a community to raise funds to fight this terrible disease,” said volunteer Event Chair Catherine Schultz in a prepared statement.

The non-competitive community walk is for all ages and registration is free. Teams of walkers will complete a 5k course and take part in activities before and after the walk.

“The American Cancer Society uses funds raised through Making Strides to fund research leading to the discovery of lifesaving treatments, and advocates for all women to have access to mammograms and treatments--regardless of income--and provides free programs and services that improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families," said Schultz, who co-owns a business in San Marino with her husband. “I’m excited to support this event I and can’t think of a better way to honor the women in our lives that we love and to bring hope to those who may be struggling with cancer right now.”

Schultz, whose mother passed away from cancer, said owner Julie Campoy, who also lost her mother to cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy at City of Hope, graciously offered to donate coffee and snacks for the event. Schultz was on-hand for Tuesday's launch party at Julienne for the , and she said Campoy is "an inspiration".
