Committee Gears Up for San Marino Centennial

As the 100-year anniversary of San Marino draws closer, plans for the celebration are coming into focus, Centennial Committee Chairman Liz Kneier tells the Pasadena Sun.

When the community gathered in February 2011 to launching in June—everything from events to commemorative merchandise—it was unclear what ideas would take shape, but one thing was certain: San Marino residents are passionate and creative when it comes to the Centennial.

Centennial Committee Chairman , shared her thoughts on San Marino life and some of what is planned for the Centennial so far in a Q&A with the Pasadena Sun:

  • In June, centennial street banners will be hung throughout the city and calendars and information will be sent to residents
  • On Sept. 24 the San Marino Historical Society Centennial Book will be unveiled at Crowell Public Library
  • In April 2013, a full month of events will be planned at the
  • In April 2013, the will host a “Founding Families of the San Marino Ranch” exhibit
  • A centennial gala at the Huntington will take place on the evening of April 25.
  • The city will also hold a celebration picnic on one of the Sundays closest to the 100th anniversary date.

“I was very interested that the foundation for the prosperity of San Marino was in the landscape and the land,” said Pomeroy. “There were swamps, springs and water everywhere. . The soil and the climate attracted people to San Marino as opposed to other neighboring cities where the land is more flat.”

Pomeroy also delved into the history of when Chinese families started coming to San Marino in the 1970s and the tension it first caused.

“We need to know that history in order to appreciate the San Marino of today,” said Pomeroy. “Chinese families are such an important part of the city. We know from the , that San Marino is a slight majority Asian community. Part of what I’m writing is how that happened and what it was like.”
