Updated: Police Pretend to Be Pedestrians, Ticket 119 Drivers

Local police pretended to be pedestrians for a pedestrian enforcement detail in San Marino Wednesday morning to target drivers not obeying crosswalk laws.

Did you see police pull over several cars at once at a certain crosswalk in San Marino Wednesday morning or were you pulled over for a pedestrian crosswalk offense?

This was due to a pedestrian enforcement detail that the and other law enforcement agencies set up Wednesday at Huntington Drive and Chelsea Road for eastbound traffic between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Officers dressed in civilian clothes pretended to be pedestrians and crossed the street. Cars who did not completely stop until the pedestrian was out of the crosswalk were pulled over for a warning or ticket.

In all, 119 drivers were cited, SMPD Sergeant Jay Wilburn told Patch.

"Most of them claimed they didn't see the pedestrian in the crosswalk," said Wilburn.

Wilburn recalled at least two pedestrian fatalities in San Marino in the past decade, one of them occuring at the intersection targeted Wednesday morning.

The San Marino Police Department and other local agencies do a pedestrian detail quarterly in a different city. This event was the first held in San Marino this year.
