According to research from the University of North Carolina and the University of California, Los Angeles, there may be genetic reasons why some people are happier than others. 80 volunteers were asked if they were satisfied with their lives. Then, samples of their blood were analyzed for similarities or differences.
Interestingly, different types of happiness were linked to different gene expressions. People whose happiness was based on materials, or consumption, had markedly unhealthy profiles. The levels of biomarkers indicating increased inflammation (which is linked to cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease). Volunteers whose happiness was based on service to others, and self improvement, had profiles with higher levels of antibody producing genes.
