5 Fun Things to do Before Summer Ends

Check out five fun, free outdoor activities the whole family can enjoy before school starts.

Disneyland: check. Movie blockbusters: check. Daytrip to the beach: Check. With Aug. 23 marking the beginning of another school year, what else can you fit in this summer? Take advantage of the outdoors and enjoy LA’s famous weather with these free local activities…before you or your kids start reciting Harry Potter movie lines out of boredom.

Outdoor Picnic. Who needs to wait for the next 4th of July? No summer in San Marino is complete without a picnic at our neighborhood gem, . Keep it simple. Invite your friends. Your kids’ friends. Heck, invite grandma. No need for a picnic planner…just grab a blanket, a deck of cards, and maybe some scrumptious meals in to-go portions from the gourmet market at

Free Summer Concert. Live music and the wind in your hair (or lack thereof): what more could you ask for? Head to Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion on Aug. 17 to see award-winning Parachute Express, a trio who has created children’s music for more than 25 years. While the Aug. 17 show at 7 p.m. is geared more towards young kids, the Pavilion offers teens and adults other genres such as jazz, folk, and country, until Aug. 28. Don’t forget to bring a blanket to share.

Family Nature walk.  Sometimes we forget that we live right next to the San Gabriel Mountains. Before all those extra-curriculars start, get the whole family together for a guided nature walk of Eaton Canyon.  You’ll get to burn off those ice cream calories from the summer!

Outdoor Movie. If your kids’ eyes aren’t glazed over yet by the all the summer blockbusters, head on over to on Wednesday, Aug. 17 for a free viewing of High School Musical 2.   There’s fun for the whole family, with Radio Disney hosting a pre-entertainment show at 6 p.m., followed by the movie once that Californian sun finally sets.

You can also revel in nostalgia and watch Toy Story on the lawn outside the on Aug. 20 at 8 p.m.

Street Fair. Every Friday night, Monrovia brings the best of a full-blown fair to a few blocks in its downtown area. The Monrovia Family Festival lasts from 5-9 p.m. and the festivities include arts and crafts, food vendors, live music and even a petting zoo! Now all we need is one of those towering ferris wheels…
