Patch Picks: Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, this week's Patch Picks highlights five (easy) ways to make your lifestyle a little more eco-friendly.

Environmentalism isn’t just for treehuggers anymore. Get in on all the green action—it’s easier than you might think! Little lifestyle changes here and there add up over time to a big impact. For example, if everyone in San Marino started riding a bike around town just on Saturdays, do you have any idea how much we’d decrease our carbon footprint by in a year? Me neither, but I’ll bet you a reusable, hand-woven hemp tote bag that it’s a lot.

Here are a few more ideas to inspire your eco-friendly inner child:

1) Green your clean. Got drycleaning? Visit Fashion Cleaners at two locations in San Marino—they use the GreenEarth® Cleaning system, a gentle, ecologically safe approach to taking care of your apparel, including delicates.

2) Just say no to paper cups and bags. Next time you stop in at for coffee, bring your own travel mug instead of getting your drink in a to-go cup. In fact, if you bring in your own reusable drink container on Earth Day, Starbucks will give you a free cup of coffee or tea! When shopping along Huntington Drive and elsewhere, take a reusable bag with you. This will make a huge difference to a whole lot of trees out there.

3) Plan ahead. How many times a week do you make a quick run to the grocery store to pick up something you forgot, or decided on the spur of the moment that you needed? With a little advance planning, you can cut down on those extra trips, and on extra fuel emissions while you’re at it. For that matter…

4) Ride a bike. Besides saving you money on gas and reducing your contribution to L.A.’s iconic smog layer, using a bicycle is a great way to get in shape. Not a bad deal! Check out Jones Bicycles for advice, equipment recommendations and cycling accessories.

5) Buy produce at your local farmers market. South Pasadena has one every Thursday night from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. It’s close enough to ride your bike (hint hint). And don’t forget your reusable tote bag for your purchases!

Green Bonus!: Check out local Earth-friendly events like on Friday and a at on Saturday.
