Patch Picks: Where to Go for Father’s Day

Treat Dad this weekend with a trip to the famous Santa Anita Park, a delicious brunch or a good ole' fashioned ice cream sundae– those are just a few of our Father's Day Picks

Father’s Day may be this Sunday, June 19 but it’s not too late to schedule some quality time with your papa. Forget the #1 Dad coffee mug this year and take him out for his favorite cuisine or catch the latest summer blockbuster. Here’s a list of five ways to celebrate Dad on his special day.

El Cholo CaféStart the day off with a delicioso Father’s Day brunch at a Pasadena favorite. At $21 per peson, the champagne brunch will offer carne asada and eggs, steak picado, mole enchiladas and more. Mariachis while sing while dad dines on his favorite Mexican dishes. Brunch runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Call (626) 795-5800 for reservations.

Treat your father to a day at the races. From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., The famous racetrack is having a special Dad’s Day BBQ Buffet at the fabulous Front Runner Restaurant. The festive menu includes all of your old man’s favorites, including ribs, pizza, brats and shrimp – along with clubhouse admission. ArcLight CinemasSurprise your dad with a trip to the movies this Father’s Day. If your dad loves superheroes, grab a bucket of the ArcLight’s famous caramel corn and catch a showing of X-Men: First Class or the Green Lantern. If you’re looking for something a little more family oriented, laugh on with Jim Carrey in Mr. Popper’s Penguins or catch the crazy animated antics of Kung-Fu Panda 2. Skip the line on Sunday – the luxury theater will reserve your seats ahead of time if you buy online. Visit the ArcLight website for more details.

If your Dad loves jazz, pack up your favorite picnic blanket and chairs and head on over to Descanso Gardens. at the picturesque outdoor garden at 1 p.m. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., finger-licking barbeque will be available for purchase from Patina Restaurant Group including baby back ribs, monkey sliders, hot dogs and corn on the cob. The concert is free with admission ($8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, $3 for children ages 5 -12 and free for children under 4). Call (818) 949-4200 for more details.

Twohey’s RestaurantIf your Dad is anything like mine, you can’t go wrong with a famous hot fudge ice cream sundae from Twohey’s Restaurant for dessert. Before you top of the night with a sweet treat, the Huntington Drive favorite is having in its own Father’s Day special menu that includes prime rib for $14.95, Maine lobster for $24.95 and shrimp and scallop marsala for $16.95.
