Mata Ortiz Pottery Demonstrations From Two Master Potters At Folk Art Is Fine Art: The Art Of Oaxaca And Northern Mexico

Two Incredible Master Potters Direct From Mata Ortiz, Mexico To Demonstrate Their Art At Fremont Gallery In South Pasadena This Weekend!! A rare opportunity to see two internationally known artists in action... up close and personal!!

Modern Mata Ortiz, DeSilva Imports and Fremont Gallery are co-hosting Folk Art Is Fine Art: The Art Of Oaxaca And Northern Mexico now through January 15, 2012. The address for the event location is Fremont Gallery 812 Fremont Avenue, Suite 100; South Pasadena, CA 91030. Opening hours for the gallery are from 1:00pm to 6:00pm on Monday through Sunday.

Master potters Lila Silveira and Carlos Carrillo from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua will be present on Friday January 6, 2012 through Sunday January 8, 2012 from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. They will demonstrate how the pottery is hand formed without the aid of a potter’s wheel, and how the pottery is painted with homemade paint brushes crafted of human hair. They will also discuss the use of natural pigments and minerals in crafting unique natural paints, and the traditional method of firing the pottery without the use of a modern kiln. All of these methods are based on traditional techniques used by the ancient Paquime Culture of Casas Grandes, Mexico. Mata Ortiz Pottery is a significant art movement from Northern Mexico, prized for the thin walls and lightweight nature of the ceramics that are being created. Much of the credit for the Mata Ortiz pottery movement is attributed to the work of Juan Quezada. Lila Silveira was a student of Juan
Quezada, and is known to have been Juan’s favorite student. To this day, Juan Quezada still shares his special clays and paints with Lila and her husband Carlos. Lila and Carlos favor the traditional designs of Mata Ortiz Pottery
taught to them by Juan Quezada, but continually seek out new formations for their pottery designs. They are two of the finest of the second generation potters in Mata Ortiz. Local schools can contact Fremont Gallery to schedule
demonstrations for their students at (626)403-9901. Three of the artists’ children will also be present, two of whom are very fine potters as well. Their youngest son, Jose Carlo, won the best young artist award for his pottery during a previous juried art show in Mata Ortiz. Stop by and see in person how these traditions are passed on within the families. Many beautiful examples of their
work will be available for purchase throughout the weekend.
