Despite an uncertain economy, Behrens and Page didn’t hesitate to open their new boutique.

“We had been asked by a lot of people to open a contemporary men’s store,” said Pattie Behrens. “We felt it filled a niche in the Pasadena area.”

The co-owners, who also own and operate , opened E.G. Man at the same time they were moving their store Therapy from the Paseo Colorado to a new location on Holly Street in Pasadena.

“The simultaneous move was very stressful,” said Behrens. “There was a lot of pressure but we have such a wonderful staff we were able to get through it.”

Instead of changing the way they operate their stores to counteract the economy, Behrens and Page keep a close eye on what products are selling.

“Instead of buying less merchandise we choose to stay on top of the merchandise we buy,” said Behrens. “Our customer service is what sets us apart.”

Behrens, who has been in the retail business for 20 years, feels that business has been picking up since the economy first started to slip.

“Men’s retail is one of the fastest growing categories,” said the Pasadena resident. “When the slump started men stopped buying but now they’re starting to buy again.”

While her new business has received a “fabulous” response from the community, Behrens feels that San Marino is not immune from the economic downturn.

“I’ve definitely seen more respect for people’s money,” Behrens said.

The new contemporary men’s sportswear boutique is home to plenty of designer denim and outwear from Rag & Bone, John Varvatos, J Brand, Vince and Ted Baker.

“One of the best things that we’ve customers say is they no longer have to drive to the Westside to buy menswear,” said Behrens. “We are really happy it’s been so well-received within the community.”

E.G. Man is located at 2533 Mission Street in San Marino.
