Along El Camino Real: The Missions of California

The California Art Club spotlights a dynamic aspect of the state’s rich history with the exhibition Along El Camino Real: The Missions of California at its gallery at the historic Old Mill, on view through January 12, 2014.

The nearly 40 paintings represent new works created during and inspired by the organization’s eight-month project to “Paint the Missions. To mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784), the Club coordinated “paint-outs” at five missions and encouraged artists to visit and paint at the remaining 16 missions in the state. At these painting events, artist members set up their easels to paint the historic monuments and their surrounding grounds “en plein air” (in the open air).

“An important aspect of the California Art Club’s mission is to support and promote California’s history,” says artist Peter Adams, who serves as the Club’s president. “With Along El Camino Real we are proud to present an exceptional collection of paintings that document these architectural wonders that played an integral role in shaping and influencing what the Golden State represents today.”

Along El Camino Real will be the first in a series of exhibitions that will showcase new works of the beloved California missions.  Following the display at The Old Mill will be a special exhibition at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, which will debut in early 2014.

“It is also fitting that we unveil the first display of artwork created in celebration of the 300th anniversary of Junipero Serra’s birth at The Old Mill, as the structure was built in 1816 as the grist mill for Mission San Gabriel, one of the nine missions Father Serra founded,” adds Adams.
