July 4th Weekend 'Surprisingly' Quiet for Crime

Besides a few alcohol and firework-related incidents, Independence Day weekend was fairly tame in San Marino.

DUI and illegal firework arrests took place in San Marino over the July 4th weekend, but not as many as might have been suspected.

“Surprisingly it was really quiet,” San Marino Lieutenant Steve Johnson told Patch Tuesday.

San Marino Police assisted other cities with DUI checkpoints and arrests over the holiday weekend but only one DUI arrest was made in San Marino over the weekend, according to the SMPD log of incidents.

The DUI arrest of a man took place at 10:02 p.m. on July 3 at Huntington Drive and San Gabriel Boulevard.

Three arrests, all on July 4, were made for use of illegal fireworks: a man was arrested at 10:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of Roanoke Road and two men were arrested at 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of Del Mar Avenue.

Johnson could not specifically recall whether DUIs or illegal firework use increased this July 4th compared to last year. He partly attributed the small amount of crime on the actual holiday to the fact that people had work the next day.

Check back later today for the San Marino police log of crime incidents from the past week.
