San Marino Teen's Sudden Death a Mystery

San Marino resident Katherine Evans, 14, collapsed during a swimming party on June 12, two days after her 8th grade graduation.

The unexpected death of a 14-year-old San Marino girl days after her 8th-grade graduation remains a mystery to many her knew her, a source who asked not to be identified told Patch on Wednesday.

A video posted to You Tube depicts myriad happy images of Katherine Evans, including several of her smiling in a blue cap and gown following Holy Family School's graduation on June 10. Two days later, the local resident died--18 days short of her 15th birthday.

According to a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of the Coroner, an autopsy was completed Monday, but the cause of death is pending. Toxicology test results could take 90 days, the spokesman said.

Representatives of Holy Family Church in South Pasadena respectfully declined to comment, as they are waiting to see if the Evans family would like to make a statement.

According to a source familiar with the family, Katherine attended a graduation pool party with her class and some of their parents on June 11. After getting out of the pool on her own, Katherine had a seizure, the source said. From there, the girl was taken to Huntington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Katherine had been excited about starting school at in La Cañada in September, the source said.

On June 14, the school posted condolences to the Evans family on its Facebook page. The message reads: "The Flintridge Sacred Heart community grieves with our friends at Holy Family School upon the loss of recent Holy Family graduate and incoming FSHA freshman Katherine Evans. We ask that all pray for her family and friends in this time of great sorrow.''
