Whiz Kids: HMS Rotary Interactors (Photos)

Each week, San Marino Patch highlights an individual kid, youth group, teen or sports team that wows us with their accomplishments. See who we chose this week and suggest a kid or group of kids you know for Whiz Kid of the Week.

This week's Whiz Kid spotlight falls on a unique group of kids who have taken it upon themselves to give back to the community. The HMS Rotary Interactors have worked closely with many different organizations to promote good will and better friendships.

The group has begun moving toward learning small business entrepreneurship by self-funding the next face of their HMS Peace Garden project. Their plan is to expand on their bi-weekly heirloom tomato and other locally-grown produce sales.

Whiz Kid Group's Key to Awesomeness:

Rotary is a philanthropic organization with influence and works directed at improving the world on an international scale. The rotary motto is "Service Above Self", something that the HMS Interactors have certainly taken to heart in their own envisioning of the Rotary creed: "None of us can do everything, but all of us can do something. Go Do Good!" The Interactors believe in inclusiveness, in reaching to every corner of the world and promoting goodwill and friendships.

They sponsor the annual and tend to their HMS Peace Garden, growing plants for their small business whilst encouraging entrepreneurship and sustainability. Through their various projects and events, they hope to promote education and raise awareness on cultural, economic and environmental issues.

Some of the events that the Interactors sponsor are: a shelter shower, an art contest, a recycling contest, monthly noontime dances, bingo and impromptu campus clean-ups. The Interactors' membership also organizes volunteer efforts to support less fortunate communities. They've set up collections for toiletries for CHLA, made cards for patients, collected eyeglasses and volunteered at the Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter just to name some of their other endeavors.

They plan to close out their long year of generous projects with locker clean-outs for a massive donation to underprivileged children in Tijuana through Healing Hearts Across Borders June 1 through June 5. Clearly the vast array of undertakings that the HMS Interactors have proves that through organization, dedication and cooperation, nothing is beyond reach.
